Raw Unheated Honey, Fresh Lemon juice and a Glass of lukewarm water.

Here is how it works…

The Power of raw unheated honey...
Honey scrapes away and dissolves fat. Fat by nature is oily. Honey has opposite qualities to fat. Honey has a drying astringent quality on fat helping to dissolve it.
According to the ancient medical scriptures raw unheated honey also has the following benefits…
improves digestion
good for the eyes
good for the voice
purifies and clears the channels
bestows contentment
heals wounds
purifies and heals ulcers
gives good color and complexion
improves intelligence
rejuvenates your body

Honey is opposite to sugar. Sugar actually makes you fatter but honey is the only sweet tasting substance that strips away fat.
Honey also should never ever be boiled, heated or cooked. It has been found that cooked or boiled honey has a deformed molecular structure turning it into a toxic glue like substance that sticks to the channels within your body and this glue like substance causes disease.
Use only raw, unheated honey. Raw unheated honey is pure medicine.

The power of lemon juice…
Fresh lemon juice is excellent to help you lose weight. Lemon juice is a…
powerful weight loss substance
antiseptic
cleanses the kidneys
cleanses the liver of fat.
helps reduce bloating and gas
aids elimination
antioxidant (vitamin C)
helps keep your skin clear

The power of a glass of luke warm water…
A simple glass of water upon waking up helps remove constipation and detoxifies your body. Ask the Yogi’s.
Cleanses the body of toxins
Helps remove fatigue
Enhances glow of skin
Prevents constipation
Increases stamina
Provides satisfaction
Helps the heart
Helps digestion
Antioxidant

Remedy:

First thing in the morning as soon as you wake up fill a glass with room temperature or luke warm water, add 1 teaspoon of raw unheated honey and add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, then drink. Take this remedy once every day on a empty stomach.
This home remedy is nature’s medicine and is a million times more effective at shedding fat than any weight loss pill. You will be surprised how something so simple as this home remedy can help you not only shed huge amounts of fat but also increase your health and well-being.
Please, in order to lose weight effectively you need to combine many weight loss principles together. Like a clean diet, exercise program, enough sleep and supplements.

Every spring, summer and fall millions of Americans sneeze, wheeze, drip, and sniffle their way through a world filled with trillions of airborne pollen, dust, and smoke particles. Over-the-counter anti-allergy drugs (antihistamines) tend to leave their users either sleepy or over-stimulated. Fortunately, modern nutritional science now offers a highly effective, natural and nontoxic remedy for allergies: the bioflavonoid quercetin.

Quercetin, a “cousin” of the more well-known bioflavonoid rutin, is one of a thousand or so members of the bioflavonoid family. Bioflavonoids are a group of polyphenol phytochemicals or plant produced compounds. They are coloring pigments widely found throughout the plant kingdom, where they also provide plants with antioxidant protection against environmental stresses. Natural diets high in vegetables, fruit, sprouts, and whole grains typically provide a total of 1,000 to 2,000 mg a day of a broad range of flavonoids. Blue-green algae are the usual source of quercetin, but it’s also available as a food supplement in tablet, capsule, softgel, and chewable form.

WHAT CAUSES AN ALLERGIC REACTION?

Allergies and asthma are inflammatory conditions usually triggered by air or food-borne pollens and chemicals called “allergens.” After these are absorbed into the blood (through the lungs, skin, or intestines), they cause the B cells (white blood cells) of allergy-sufferers to produce billions of molecules of the allergic antibody IgE. The IgE molecules then travel through the bloodstream until they combine to with mast cells or basophils.

Mast cells and basophils are the main storage sites for histamine and serotonin. The IgE allergic antibody then causes the cell membranes of the mast cells/basophils to become “leaky, ” allowing their storage load of histamine and serotonin to pour into the surrounding blood and tissues. The IgE-released histamine and serotonin then produce the familiar allergic symptoms of runny, swollen nose; blocked sinuses; itchy eyes; skin blotches; coughing and wheezing; etc.

QUERCETIN TO THE RESCUE!

Quercetin has a strong affinity for mast cells and basophils. It tends to stabilize their cell membranes, preventing them from spilling their pro-inflammatory, allergy-symptom-causing load of histamine/serotonin into the surrounding blood and tissue in response to the IgE antibody and without the release of these potent inflammatory mediators, the familiar misery of allergies simply will not occur, even though you’ve inhaled the pollen, animal hair, or whatever normally triggers allergy attacks.

Asthma is an allergic inflammation involving the lungs. During an asthma attack (which can be triggered by air- or food-borne pollen, dust, animal hair, chemicals, etc.), the millions of tiny air sacs within the lungs are constricted, seriously impairing breathing and causing a feeling of tightness in the chest. In addition to IgE-released histamine, the primary biochemical cause of the asthmatic symptoms is a group of fatty acid derivatives called leukotrienes (LTs). These asthma-causing LTs are made from arachidonic acid (a key fatty acid constituent of many cell membranes) by the action of two enzymes – phospholipase A2 and lipoxygenase. Quercetin is known to be a powerful inhibitor of both these enzymes. Thus it prevents the formation of asthma-causing LTs, even when the IgE antibody (formed in response to inhaled or swallowed allergens) is present in the lungs to stimulate LT Production and release. Since quercetin suppresses the release and/or production of the two primary inflammatory mediators–histamine and leukotrienes–that cause the actual symptoms of asthma, its potential benefit in supporting a healthy immune inflammatory response and normal respiration.

Quercetin is a safe, nontoxic substance. A report by I. Hirono et al in Cancer Letters (1981), for example, found no evidence of toxicity or carcinogenicity in rats, even when quercetin made up 10 percent of their total dietary intake.

Unfortunately, quercetin is barely soluble in water, so poor dietary absorption may limit its efficacy. Because of this, Michael Murray, N.D., has suggested that quercetin be taken in combination with bromelain to improve its absorption. Bromelain is a natural, protein-digesting enzyme derived from pineapples. It has been used “to increase absorption of compounds, including antibiotics. Also, bromelain has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that synergize with quercetin. Bromelain inhibits several other common inflammatory mediators, including bradykinin and fibrin. It’s widely used in sports medicine to reduce the pain and swelling of bruises, sprains, muscle tears, etc., for this reason.

Here at Willner Chemist we have had numerous customers who suffer from allergies and asthma that have successfully used quercetin to support their health and well being during Atlanta’s intense and extended allergy season. Some asthma suffers even use it year round because of the benefits they feel they receive. Around 1,000mg to 2,000mg a day in divided doses between meals is the usually recommended effective dose.

If you’re struggling to maintain healthy body weight, you’re not alone. Up to 65% of Americans face the same challenge Even a modest increase in fat pounds can have an impact on overall health, especially when it’s stubborn belly or visceral fat.

The problem is that conventional methods to combat age-related changes that predispose us to gain weight have proven ineffective. Adjustments in diet and lifestyle alone are often not enough. But there is hope.

In a significant scientific advance, a potent new weapon has been identified to help safely induce weight loss, a novel dual plant extract that favorably modulates six pathways that fat cells use to trigger weight gain.

Scientists investigating these plant extracts found they can block fat storage at the cellular level. In a placebo-controlled study, those taking this dual plant extract lost 4.05 inches of abdominal fat and dropped 11.4 pounds after eight weeks with weight loss observed as early as 14 days.

How Unwanted Fat Storage Occurs

Cells that store fat are called adipocytes. They are deposited throughout our bodies. As we age, adipocytes tend to expand and congregate in areas that are cosmetically unsightly and detrimental to our health.

Of greatest concern are the adipocytes that deposit deep in our abdomens. This “visceral fat” represents more than fat stored on our waistlines. Visceral fat is chemically active tissue that churns out a torrent of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Those with bulging belly fat suffer constant bombardment from toxic cytokines that trigger this metabolic syndrome. The widespread problem led scientists to seek out plant extracts that specifically interfere with fat storage in our abdominal anatomy.

Excess calories transform to fat deposits in adipocytes through a multi-step process known as adipogenesis. When fewer calories are consumed, fat is released from adipocytes to meet the body’s energy needs. This is known as lipolysis.

Adipocytes develop from undifferentiated stem cells. Premature fat cells are called pre-adipocytes. When you ingest more calories than your body needs, “young” pre-adipocytes respond by maturing into “adult” adipocytes.

Adult” adipocytes take up excess fatty acids from your bloodstream and begin expanding. Every excess calorie contributes to the maturation and growth of fat cells in this way. Past a certain point, adipocytes distend and become bloated, much in the same way your belly does.

Not all adipocytes are the same. While fat cells distribute throughout your body, those that store in your abdomen are more than just storage “containers.” Belly fat cells are chemically active. They form fatty tissue capable of releasing detrimental pro-inflammatory cytokines.

The mass of excess visceral fat deposits generates a pro-inflammatory flood of cytokines. So unwanted body fat storage happens when pre-adipocyte stem cells mature in order to store excess dietary fat (adipogenesis) while the ability to break down stored fat (lipolysis) diminishes.

Searching for natural interventions that would effectively inhibit fat accumulation (adipogenesis) and enhance fat burning (lipolysis), scientists evaluated more than a thousand plants for evidence that would meet this criteria.

Two plant extracts which had significant biological effects were: Sphaeranthus indicus flower and Mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana). In the laboratory, S. indicus and mangosteen extracts both powerfully impeded adipogenesis.

Combating Surplus Body Fat Storage

When cells were treated with S. indicus alone, fat storage was inhibited by as much as 65%, compared with control cells. Photographs (above) show a markedly visible difference between the two cell groups. The control cells show a bloated, “foamy” appearance, bulging with fat droplets, compared to the smaller, more naturally contoured cells treated with the S. indicus extract.

Each of these extracts also enhanced lipolysis (or fat burning), by as much as 56% compared to control cells. Having identified these unifying properties in the two extracts, the researchers set out to determine if they would exhibit enhanced effects when used in combination.

They found that the S. indicus and mangosteen extracts favorably modulate the activity of six genomic pathways involved in fat cell formation and breakdown. Remarkably, these extracts reduced gene expression that promotes adipogenesis while favorably influencing a gene involved in desirable lipolysis. Thus they modulated the markers involved in unwanted cellular fat accumulation by inhibiting adipogenesis and promoting lipolysis.

Given these observations, researchers recognized that this novel blend of plant extracts could result in significant weight loss via three distinct mechanisms:

Preventing “young” fat cells (pre-adipocytes) from developing into “mature” fat cells (adipocytes);

Reducing the amount of fatty acids adipocytes could absorb;

Speeding breakdown of bloated adipocytes’ existing fat stores.

Weight Loss Findings in Humans

To evaluate the effects of these two plant extracts, 60 obese adults were recruited and divided into two groups. One arm of 30 patients functioned as the placebo group while a second group of 30 patients received 800 mg per day of a combination of the two plant extracts. Both groups followed a 2,000-calorie- per-day diet and were asked to walk 30 minutes five days a week.

At the end of eight weeks, the group receiving the two plant extracts showed the following improvements:

Reduction in total body weight of 11.4 pounds. This was 3.7 times greater than the placebo group.

Reduction of 4.05 inches in the abdomen. This was 2 times greater than the placebo group.

Reduction in body mass index (BMI) of 2.05. A decrease 3.9 times greater than the placebo group.

In addition to the favorable results seen at eight weeks, researchers were impressed with the reduction in waist and hip circumference, as well as lost body weight that occurred within the first 14 days! In fact after only two weeks, the average weight reduction was 4.6 pounds.

At eight weeks, the dual plant extract group showed reduction in the waist-to-hip ratio that was 2.2 times greater than the placebo group. This is an important improvement as it indicates dangerous visceral belly fat is being lost.

These findings are supported by a second, similarly designed trial involving 60 obese subjects. They were divided into three groups that consisted of a placebo arm, an active arm receiving one plant extract, and another active arm that received a dual plant extract. All participants followed a 2,000-calorie-per-day diet and were asked to walk for 30 minutes five times a week for 8 weeks.

After eight weeks the group receiving the dual plant extract experienced statistically significant changes in their abdominal circumference, total body weight, and hip circumference similar to those seen in the first study mentioned above.

These confirmatory findings indicate that this novel dual plant extract may enable aging humans to safely shed unwanted body fat stores. No major adverse events or side effects were reported in either study.

Summary

Obesity arises from the increased size of individual adipocytes (fat cells) due to enhanced lipid (fat) accumulation. It worsens as greater numbers of pre-adipocytes transform into dysfunctional, bloated adipocytes.

A novel blend of plant extracts containing Sphaeranthus indicus flower (S. indicus) and Mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana) has been shown to favorably influences six distinct pathways by which fat cells trigger weight gain.

In cell culture, these plant extracts reduce the ability of progenitor fat cells (pre-adipocytes) to transform into bloated fat cells. These studies also show that components of this dual plant extract reduce the amount of fatty acids taken up by adipocytes (adipogenesis) and facilitate the breakdown (lipolysis) of fat stored in existing adipocytes.

In a placebo-controlled clinical trial involving obese humans, this blend of S. indicus and mangosteen plant extracts safely induced weight loss of 11.4 pounds, along with a decline of 2.05 in body mass index (BMI) and a reduction of 4.05 inches in unwanted visceral fat.

As humans age, proteins in their bodies become irreversibly damaged by glycation reactions. Glycation is the cross-linking of proteins and sugars to form non-functioning structures called advanced glycation end products or AGE. It is the mechansim behind the accelerated destruction of cells. tissues, and organs observed in diabetics.

In the laboratory, glycation’s effect on living tissue was found to be identical to the process by which meat is browned when cooked at high temperatures. Healthy proteins also turn brown in the presence of excess glucose and become functionally impaired.

Scientist have confirmed that this destructive process may also occur in healthy individuals when blood glucose levels are sustained above 85 mg/dL, a commonplace occurrence after a heavy meal is consumed.

The damage from glycation is irreversible but fortunately a form of vitamin B1 called benfotiamine, the fat-soluble of this B vitamin, protects cells to prevent glycation and the accelerated aging triggered by elevated blood sugar levels.

Benfotiamine supports healthy blood sugar metabolism and effectively modulates multiple destructive biochemical pathways that are induced by higher than desirable blood glucose levels. It supports the health of kidneys, eyes, nerves, heart, and the endothelial lining of the blood vessels.

Another substance that is a powerful anti-glycation agent is L-Carnosine, a dipeptide which is found in the brain, heart, skin, muscles, kidneys, and stomach. In addition to its anti-glycation properties, L-Carnosine also supports brain function by reducing lipid peroxidation and stabilizing cell membranes.

Pyridoxal 5′-phospate or P-5-P, the active form of vitamin B6, has also been shown to protect against both lipid and protein glycation reactions associated with cellular damage and the aging process.

An outstanding product from Life Extension, their Mitochondrial Energy Optimizer, includes all of these and other ingredients to protect against glycation, promote a healthy inflammation response, and prevent mitochondrial decay.

Millions of people throughout Asia consume Goji berries every day for both their unique, satisfying flavor, and for their health benefits. In China’s first herbal encyclopedia, Shen Nong’s Materia Medica, written in the 1st century B.C., Goji was classified as a “superior tonic,” a class of herbs that people should take on an on-going basis to preserve youth and to promote general well being of life. Goji’s superior tonic classification has stood the test of time. Two thousand years later, Goji berries are still being consumed regularly throughout Asian civilizations for those purported reasons.

Recent scientific analysis has discovered the following benefits from consuming goji berries regularly:

POSITIVE MOODS

In Asia, goji is known as “The Happy Berry.” It has historically been used in Asia to uplift and brighten one’s mood. It is said that consistent consumption of goji “brings about a cheerful attitude.”

HEALTHY ENERGY LEVELS

With an abundance of polysaccharides, goji supports healthy energy levels by providing concentrated nutrients for cells.

HEALTHY SLEEP PATTERNS

Historically goji has been used to support sound and restful sleep. As a natural secretagogue, goji supports the body’s endocrine and glandular systems, which play important roles in healthy sleep patterns.

HEALTHY IMMUNE RESPONSE

It is believed that goji’s ability to support immune system function may be attributed to the naturally occurring Lycium barbarum glycoconjugate polysaccharides (LBGPs). These nutrients support the different classes of immune cells, supporting healthy cell function.

EYE HEALTH

Goji berries are one of the richest sources of carotenoids on earth. They are also packed with ingredients like zeaxanthin and lutein, which further support eye health.

There are many different ways to obtain the healthful benefits of goji. As far as supplements are concerned, one of the best products available is Goji 100 by Genesis Today. Goji 100 offers an abundance of naturally occurring compounds and cell nutrients in a 100% pure and potent liquid dietary supplement made entirely from USDA certified organic, wild-harvested goji berries (Lycium barbarum) from Genesis Today’s Superfood Farms in China. Using a traditional slow-cooking method, they utilize 100% of the goji berry to yield the full potency of the polysaccharides (glycoconjugates), naturally-occurring antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin and carotenoids known to support eye health.

If you’re looking for Goji as a snack, the best quality product by far is Heaven Mountain Goji Berries from Dragon Herbs. These berries are plump, juicy, naturally sweet, and absolutely delicious. Unlike other Gojis on the market, Heaven Mountain® Goji Berries are sweeter, fleshier and have less seeds. They have a much higher moisture level which contributes to their texture as plump and juicy.

Most Gojis on the market are rock hard. This is not without a reason. All the Gojis sold in the US come from China, whether they are labeled as Himalayan, Tibetan, or Wild. That translates to a very long transit time from the growing regions to the hands of the consumers. Typically, the berries reach the consumers at least 4-6 months after they are harvested. To stay shelf stable, most Goji farmers dry their Goji until the berries are very bone dry and very hard.

After years of research and development, Dragon Herbs has developed a special handling process and a custom designed packaging that allows the berries’ natural moisture level to be retained while satisfying the shelf stability required in commercial trade nowadays.

Aging and the loss of cellular vitality is characterized by a number of factors including free radical reactions and mitochondrial decay. Fortunately science has revealed natural substances and nutrients which help to protect delicate cellular structures and support cells in performing their life-sustaining metabolic processes.

Mitochondria are the cellular energy generators that supply virtually all the power your body requires for a healthy life span. An abundance of published studies underscores the critical importance of the mitochondria to overall health, especially as we age. Energy-intensive organs like the heart and brain are particularly dense with mitochondria.

The enormous amount of energy generated within the mitochondria exposes them to constant free radical attack. The resulting mitochondrial decay is a hallmark of aging.

CoQ10 has long been used to enhance mitochondrial energy production but until recently the only natural ways for aging individuals to increase the number of mitochondria in their bodies were long term calorie restriction or exhaustive physical activity, which are difficult or impractical for most people to implement.

In an unprecedented breakthrough, a compound called PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) offers a viable alternative. PQQ has been shown to support mitochondrial biogenesis, the spontaneous generation of new mitochondria in aging cells.

PQQ protects and augments delicate mitochondrial structures to promote youthful cellular function in three distinct ways:

1. Antioxidant power. PQQ, like CoQ10, is also a highly potent antioxidant. Its etraordinary molecular structure enables it to facilitate thousands of biochemical reactions in the mitochondria, without breaking down, for maximum antioxidant and bioenergetic support.

2.Favorably modulates gene expression. PQQ activates genes that promote the formation of new mitochondria and beneficially interacts with genes involved in mitochondrial health. These same genes also support healthy body weight and normal fat and sugar metabolism.

3.Mitochondrial defense. Mitochondria possess their own DNA, distinct from the DNA contained in the nucleus. Unfortunately, compared to nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA is relatively unprotected. PQQ’s antioxidant potency and favorable gene expresion properties act to support mitochondrial defense.

A growing body of research indicates that PQQ’s unique nutritional profile supports heart health and cognitive function, alone and in combination with CoQ10. Research shows that PQQ support heart cell function in the presence of free radicals and when taken in combination with CoQ10, just 20mg of PQQ per day has been shown memory, attention, and cognition in maturing individuals.

All this makes PQQ a breakthrough weapon in the battle against aging. Here at Willner Chemist we have available a purified, highly potent form of PQQ from Japan that is produced through a natural fermentation process. Come by today and check out this amazing addition to your arsenal against aging.

In 1972, a group of Japanese researchers reported that Gynostemma tea was being consumed as a daily “longevity tea” by large numbers of southern Chinese people. It was revered in the regions where it grew as “magical grass” because of its many reputed health benefits. Subsequently, studies conducted first in Japan revealed that Gynostemma, also known as Jiaogulan, was extremely rich in saponins that were extremely close to those found in Ginseng and Siberian Ginseng. As it turned out, Gynostemma contains over 80 of these beneficial saponins, as opposed to the approximately 35 found in Ginseng. Many of these gypenosides are actually almost identical to the ginsenosides found in Ginseng. Gynostemma is also much cheaper to produce, since it takes less than a year to cultivate it. Ginseng has to be aged for at least 5 years before it is ready for consumption. Gynostemma tea had generally been made from wild mountain Gynostemma pentaphyllum plants, but as Gynostemma’s reputation as a longevity herb grew, farmers learned to cultivate it. Within a decade, Gynostemma was being consumed by millions of Asians as a tonic tea.

The ultimate greatness of Gynostemma lies in its broad spectrum adaptogenic (stress modulating) quality. Adaptogenic herbs improve the efficiency of the metabolic, neurological, immunologic, respiratory and endocrine systems. Prolonged consumption of Gynostemma tends to have a highly protective quality because it strengthens the adaptive capacity of the person at every level of their life.

In Asia, Gynostemma is considered to be

Invigorating (does not cause hyperactivity – not a stimulant)

Calming (promotes a sense of peace – not a sedative)

Anti-aging (antioxidant and more)

Anti-inflammatory (not as a medicine, but to help reduce the factors that cause low grade, sub-clinical chronic inflammation experienced by all humans)

Immune-regulating (not as a medicine, but to help support the normal healthy functioning of various immune functions)

A respiratory tonic (improve respiratory efficiency)

A digestive aid (Gynostemma is very soothing)

Gynostemma is one of a few natural substances that has been shown to increase levels of SOD (Superoxide Dismutase), one of the most important antioxidants in the body. It also seems to have a double-direction activity on many processes in the body, which is an effect that many adaptogenic herbs exhibit. In the case of Gynostemma, the effects are most pronounced when dealing with blood pressure, blood-sugar, and cholesterol levels.

Gynostemma has developed an enormous reputation in Asia as a major aid in weight management programs

Gynostemma has been shown to have a double-direction activity with regard to weight. Gynostemma can be useful in reducing excessive body fat, when combined with a reasonable exercise program and a healthy diet that modulates caloric intake.

Gynostemma may also help athletes, body builders or excessively slim people to gain weight.

Gynostemma accelerates the body’s metabolism and helps adjust blood sugar and blood fat levels. Adjusting blood sugar and blood fat are critical steps in attaining healthy metabolic function, whether one wants to lose weight by reducing excessive body fat, gain weight by building lean muscle, or maintain healthy weight by helping regulate bodily functions.

Although Gynostemma is not laxative, it may help maintain healthy bowel movements.

Gynostemma acts as a scavenger in the stomach and intestines, ridding the body of toxins, toxic microbes and waste that otherwise may become lodged in the intestines.

Gynostemma protects the stomach lining.

Spring Dragon Longevity Tea uses Gynostemma as the main ingredient, but the leaves are actually infused with the following tonic herb extracts:

Schizandra – Called the “quintessence of Chinese herbs,” Schizandra is a delicious, exotic tonic fruit that is traditionally used to tonify all the systems of the body, clean the liver, open the lungs, nourish and moisturize the skin, and sharpen the mind. It is a potent antioxidant.

Goji Berries – Known in Asia as a premier “longevity and anti-aging herb,” this delicious tonic fruit is a true superfood, rich in antioxidants. It is famous for enhancing strength, vision and beauty. Goji is rich in immune-potentiating polysaccharides.

Astragalus – One of the most important herbs in all of herbalism, Astragalus is highly regarded for its immune-regulating, immune-potentiating effects. It is also a potent energy tonic and blood tonic.

Eleuthero – Also known as “Siberian Ginseng,” Eleuthero is famous for its ability to enhance physical and mental endurance, to help us handle stress more efficiently and as a gentle mood elevator. Eleuthero, like ginseng and Gynostemma, is rich in saponins. It is the ultimate adaptogenic herb.

Luo Han Guo – This delicious, exotic fruit has been used for centuries as a lung tonic. It contains mogroside, a potent immune-potentiating glucoside.

This blend is not just a bunch of herbs thrown together. It is a very potent infusion that is 5 to 10 times stronger than just a regular blend of herbs. Consumed daily, Spring Dragon is one of the best herbal teas you can drink.

You can find this tea here at Willner Chemists in Atlanta. We also have the Gynostemma in pill form from Mayway, but they sell it under the Chinese name “Jiaogulan.” Gynostemma is still relatively unknown in the world. Until about 30 years ago it was exclusively drunk only in certain parts of southern China. It has since caught on in Asia, but is just now starting to become popular in the west.

Spring Dragon tea is called the healthiest tea on earth, but it happens to be rather inexpensive for a longevity tea. That’s why many refer to Gynostemma as Ginseng at a tea price!

Fucoxanthin – A New Weight Loss Ingredient

Can a pigment from seaweed really help you to loose weight? Science suggest that the answer may be yes thanks to a compound called fucoxanthin. Fucoxanthin is a naturally occurring brown pigment that belongs to the class of non-provitamin A carotenoids. Fucoxanthin is typically found in the chloroplasts of brown seaweed, giving them a brown or olive-green color. Similar to other carotenoids, fucoxanthin possesses antioxidative properties.

In addition to its unique antioxidant properties, fucoxanthin has been shown to affect DNA such a way that it results in upregulation of uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) production within the cells, particularly adipose tissue, both brown and white. UCP-1 is a member of a family of uncoupling proteins that occurs in the inner mitochondrial membrane. UCP-1 was originally given the name thermogenin for its ability to induce thermogenesis.

Fucoxanthin and Thermogenesis

Thermogenesis is a term that describes generation, or production of heat. There are two types of thermogenesis: shivering and non-shivering. Shivering thermogenesis is always associated with muscular contraction and often occurs as a reaction to the lower environment temperature. Non-shivering production of heat is a type of continuous thermogenesis that occurs in both muscle and adipose tissues, and is dependent on the metabolic rate.

Since the amount of energy derived from oxidation of the same amount of fats, carbohydrates and proteins is the highest for fats (9 kcal/g), the latter substrate is the preferred and most effective form of stored energy in the body. Fat collected in the adipose tissue represents the depot of unutilized energy the body “puts away” when the need for energy is less than the caloric value of the nutrients the body has at its disposal. Conversion of nutrients (such as fat) to energy occurs within the cells, more specifically, inside cell structures called mitochondria.

Mitochondria’s role in energy exchange is well recognized. Often referred to as cellular “power plants”, mitochondria are able to convert energy derived from oxidation of various substrates into the ultimate “mobile” energy unit, – ATP (adenosine triphospate) molecule for further use in cellular processes such as muscle contraction, or alternatively, dissipate in the form of heat (thermogenesis). The efficiency of the ATP generation process within the mitochondria is never 100%. So-called “mitochondrial proton leak” is a phenomenon responsible for heat generation that occurs as a result of not fully aligned (coupled) biochemical reactions aimed to generate ATP.

The balance between ATP production and heat generation, among other things, is regulated by specialized proteins called UCP (uncoupling proteins). Research shows that dietary fucoxanthin supports UCP-1 production resulting in a shift of the equilibrium toward “proton leak” and heat generation. Consequently, additional fat breakdown takes place to accommodate production of the same amount of ATP. Thus, UCP-1 uncouples the process of ATP production, making it “less efficient” in terms of ATP yield and more efficient in terms of heat generation.

Fucoxanthin-induced thermogenesis support is non-stimulant in nature because it bypasses adrenergic (stimulatory or sympathetic) receptors at the surface of the cells that are also known to be UPC-1 inducing. Instead, it addresses the process of energy distribution at the level of mitochondria, precisely where conversion of fat into energy is taking place.

This mechanism has been demonstrated in brown adipose tissue of experimental animals supplemented with fucoxanthin. However, it was not until 2003 when a group of Japanese researchers demonstrated that the same UCP-1 induction and increase in thermogenesis could be induced in white adipose tissue where UCP-1 has not been previously described. Since white adipose tissue is the only fat tissue of a clinical significance in adults, this discovery ignited renewed interest in fucoxanthin from researchers throughout the world.

In 2006, two clinical trials were conducted by a research group led by Prof. Abidov of Russian Institute of Immunopathology in collaboration with the National Institute for Sport Performance, Moscow, Russia. The first pilot-type study dealt with establishing a therapeutic range based on changes in energy expenditure rate in 40 female volunteers supplemented with various doses of fucoxanthin alone and in combination with CLnA (punicic acid from pomengranate seed oil). The second study was a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial where 110 overweight women underwent a 16-week, 1800 calorie diet along with supplementation which yielded positive and statistically significant results. The full studies are expected to be published in 2008. Thus, these clinical trials are the first confirmation of the efficacy of orally supplemented fucoxanthin in humans in terms of weight management.

Further, the results of the aforementioned clinical trial revealed that fucoxanthin reduces visceral fat. Visceral fat is the type of fat covering organs of the abdominal cavity, specifically liver and omentum. Excessive visceral adiposity is now considered to be one of the major health risk factors among the Western population. At the same time, peripheral (subcutaneous) adiposity by itself is not deemed to be a significant metabolic risk factor, unless it’s associated with significant excess of visceral adipose tissue in the body. The ability of fucoxanthin to address the problem of visceral adiposity seems promising in terms of the weight and metabolism management, along with dietary and lifestyle changes.

Fucoxanthin is a clinically proven non-stimulant thermogenic. Unlike many popular stimulant-type metabolism enhacers ( e.g. ephedra, caffeine, guarana), fucoxanthin has no effect on the sympathetic nervous system and can be taken without concerns of cardiovascular exhaustion or blood pressure deregulation.

The mode of action of fucoxanthin is such that it bypasses the nervous system and shifts energy balance from producing ATP toward thermogenesis. It occurs in the mitochondria, at the exact point where the energy becomes available for either capturing it in the form of ATP or for heat generation. Fucoxanthin does it by upregulating production of UCP- 1(uncoupling protein 1), also known as thermogenin.

Fucoxanthin has antioxidant properties that are different from other carotenoids. Unlike other carotenoids, it is active in environments with low oxygen presence (most tissues under physiological conditions have very low oxygen presence). Also, instead of donating electron, like many antioxidants, fucoxanthin donates proton. A combination of these two attributes is unique to fucoxanthin and is most likely due to its unusual chemical structure (presence of allenic bond in the carotenoid formation).

A Traditional Chinese Medical Approach

Hair Loss
Throughout history, people have sought remedies for hair loss. In Assyria, in 1500 BCE, common law dictated hairstyles according to social position and occupation. Baldness, considered an unsightly human defect, was hidden by wigs. Ancient Egyptian remedies included chopped romaine lettuce applied to the scalp and an ointment made of juniper berries (Juniperus communis) and two unidentified plants kneaded together into a paste with oil and heated. Hippocrates applied pigeon dung to his scalp to try to ‘sprout’ hair. The first professional barbers shops opened in Rome around 303 BCE. Roman cures for hair loss included perfumed ointments made from crushed myrtle berries, bear grease, and hippopotamus fat; salves containing the urine of young foals; and liniments made from sulfur and tea. By the 1790s, powdering hair with heavily scented bleached and pulverized wheat flour was considered stylish. Members of the upper classes in colonial America wore powdered wigs to hide their receding hairlines. American and European folk medicine recommended the use of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and olive oil (Olea europaea) scalp massages to promote hair growth.1,2
Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the human body: the average rate of growth is about one-half inch a month. Optimal hair growth occurs from age 15 to 30, slows down from age 40 to 50, and is progressively lost by about age 50. Most men lose hair to some degree by age 35 and are more likely to lose their hair than are women. The life cycle of hair is divided into anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting) phases. On a healthy scalp, 90% to 95% of hair follicles are growing, less than 1% is undergoing involution, and 5% to 10 re resting. The prognosis for encouraging hair growth is favorable if treatment begins before the growth stops altogether.1,2
Hair loss affects 80 percent of American men. Male pattern baldness (hair loss at the top of the head, called androgenetic alopecia) appears most frequently in men over age 40 and is considered to be a normal part of aging. Male pattern hair loss, which often begins during early adulthood, eventually results in a receding hairline or balding at the crown of the head. Androgenetic alopecia results from the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5-á-reductase. Genetics determines the age at which hair follicles begin producing DHT. Hair on certain portions of the scalp reacts differently to DHT.
Hair loss among women is usually less severe than in men and typically occurs over the crown of the scalp. Approximately two-thirds of women experience hair loss after menopause. The extent of the hair loss is determined by hormones, heredity, vitamin deficiencies, and age.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complex and sophisticated healing system. Its origins stem from the ancient Taoist philosophy that views the person as a whole–body and mind are unified, one influencing the other. This approach makes TCM one of the first holistic medical models. It is an intuitive practice, using its own theoretical principles to identify patterns of disharmony. Acupressure, acupuncture, herbal remedies and exercise such as qigong and tai chi are all forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The ancient Chinese believed that a universal energy–chi–is present in every living creature. Chi circulates throughout the body on specific pathways called meridians, allowing the body to function properly and in good health. If this flow of energy is blocked, however, the system is disrupted and pain and illness result. The goal of Traditional Chinese Medicine is to restore and maintain the harmony and balance of chi’s flow.3
Fundamental to this philosophy is the concept of yin and yang. Yin and yang represent the principle that all aspects of life have two sides, of equal importance, working together to create and maintain harmony. One has no meaning without the other. You cannot appreciate heat, for example, without understanding cold. If you are experiencing harmony, yin and yang are equal and in balance. An excess of one can lead to a deficiency of the other, and the goal of Traditional Chinese Medicine is to correct that imbalance.
Treatments
Many are concerned, especially as they get older, with the condition of their hair. We would like to prevent the graying of our hair. Both men and women, of course, would like to prevent hair loss. Women find that their hair starts to thin, and lacks lustre and strength. This can be a major source for concern.
“Hair loss can have a significant psychosocial impact on patients. Persons who experience hair loss may develop emotional, social, and psychological difficulties, including social anxiety, increased self-consciousness, low self-esteem, embarrassment, and depression.”1,2
There are drugs available, and hair transplants. But neither of these solutions is ideal. Concerns about the side-effects of pharmaceutical drugs as led to an increased interest in natural remedies, and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine has proven to be one of the more promising approaches.
The Phyto-Tech™ product, Lustrous Hair, is based on this Traditional Chinese Medical approach. The formula contains the following herbs: Fo-Ti Root 230 mg, Rehmannia Root 220 mg, Astragalus Root 110 mg, Dong Quai Root 90 mg, White Peony Root 90 mg, Safflower Flower 70 mg, Chinese Salvia Root 60 mg, Liguisticum wallichii Rhizome 60 mg.
As explained above, the basis for choosing these particular herbs is not based upon our usual western medical pharmacological philosophy. This is a traditional Chinese formula, and it has been found to be effective. But some information on several of these herbs can still be enlightening.
Fo-Ti (He Shou Wu, Polygonum multiflorum)
Fo-ti is a plant native to China, where it continues to be widely grown. It also grows extensively in Japan and Taiwan. Fo-ti has a history of reversing and preventing the effects of aging.4
“A growing concern about the side-effects of pharmaceutical drugs has led to an increased interest in herbal medicine. The authors note that the Chinese botanical fo-ti (he shou wu; Polygonum multiflorum) has shown recent promise as a hair and color restorative and is capable of inducing terminal hair to grow instead of vellus hair (the fine baby hair growth associated with use of minoxidil). Practitioners of Oriental medicine prescribe the herb to prevent hair from thinning and graying, work as a blood tonic or mild laxative, tonify the liver and kidneys, strengthen cartilage and bone, regulate blood pressure, and prevent hardening of the arteries.”1,2
“Regarded as a rejuvenating plant, fo-ti has been thought to prevent aging and to promote longevity. . . Fo-ti has been recommended by Eastern and Western herbalists as a tonic to maintain youthful rigor, increase energy, tone the kidneys and liver and purify the blood. It is also use to lower cholesterol, reduce hypertension and improve immune function. . . The Chinese common name for fo-ti, he-shou-wu, was the name of a Tang dynasty man whose infertility was supposedly cured by fo-ti. In addition, his long life was attributed to the tonic properties of this herb. Since then, Traditional Chinese Medicine has used fo-ti to treat premature aging, weakness, vaginal discharges, numerous infectious diseases, angina pectoris, and erectile dysfunction”4
Rehmannia
Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa, dihuang), a member of the Scrophulariaceae (figwort family), has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries to nourish yin and tonify the kidneys.
“In TCM, rehmannia is used to remove heat from the blood and enrich the blood. This traditional use is supported by pre-clinical studies, which have shown that aqueous rehmannia extracts increase the proliferation of hematopoietic (blood cell producing) stem cells and bone marrow. An ethanolic extract of rehmannia rhizome has been shown to improve hemorheology (blood flow), reducing the obstruction of peripheral microcirculation associated with chronic disease. Rehmannia polysaccharide has been found to stimulate blood cell production in bone marrow in vivo. . . Research has also demonstrated that aqueous rehmannia extracts possess dose-dependent anti-tumor effects and to stimulate apoptosis in vitro. . . Rehmannia has been shown to elicit cardiovascular effects, including effects on blood pressure. Rehmannia may also be helpful in the treatment of dementia, and the dried rhizome has been found to have sedative effects in vivo. . . Rehmannia extract has also been found to prevent bone loss in osteoporosis through increasing the growth of osteoblasts (bone-forming cells) and inhibiting osteoclasts (cells that reabsorb bone). In TCM, rehmannia is used to treat diabetes, and researchers have demonstrated in vivo hypoglycemic effects of rehmannia extracts and constituents, . .In addition, research has shown that rehmannia dried rhizome extract may be effective in inhibiting diabetic neuropathy. Research indicates that rehmannia has anti-ulcer effects, through the inhibition of gastric acid secretion, prevention of ulcer formation, and promotion of gastric ulcer healing. One in vivo study has shown that an aqueous rehmannia extract improves kidney function and reduces the excretion of protein in urine due to kidney damage, which supports the TCM use of rehmannia to nourish kidney yin. In addition, rehmannia has been shown to protect the liver. ”5
Historically, Rehmannia has been used as a hair tonic, to prevent premature graying.4
Astragalus Root
“In China, the national version of a nourishing pot of chicken soup is likely to contain . . . astragalus root. In the exotic language of traditional Chinese medicine, astragalus boosts the immune sytem by ‘stabilizing the exterior’ and strengthening the ‘chi.’ The Chinese knew thousands of years ago that astragalus could strengtthen our shield (‘exterior’) against disease and increase overall vitality (chi), long before anyone knew about bacteria, white blood cells, or the immune system.”6
Astragalus differs from herbs like Echinacea in that is is effective as a long-term preventive and restorative herb, “both to prevent illness and to renew energy and vitality one an acute illness has passed.” 6
Astragalus is an adaptogenic herb. As explained in a paper by Wallace, “At the core of an adaptogen’s scope of actions is the ability to help the body cope more effectively with stress. This action amounts to recharging the adrenal glands, the body’s stress-response mechanism. The adrenal glands (covering the upper surface of the kidneys) synthesize dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine, compounds ‘responsible for the changes that occur [in the body] during the fight-or-flight reaction.’ Stress-related health problems are said by this author to include asthma, angina, cancer, depression, diabetes, minor illnesses, hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, PMS, ulcers, and more. Studies indicate that adaptogens not only help the body cope with stress, but can enhance general health and performance.”7
Preliminary clinical and laboratory evidence supports the use of astragalus as a general tonic, one of its primary functions in TCM and among Western herbal practitioners. It appears to increase oxygenation in the body by stimulating the formation of red blood cells in bone marrow. Astragalus may also work as an antioxidant, protecting the body against harmful free radicals in a variety of degenerative diseases.
Dong Quai Root, White Peony Root, Ligusticum wallichii Rhizome, Safflower Flower.
Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) is often thought of as “the female ginseng’ In fact, this extremely popular herb in China is called tang kuei, which means “proper order,” as it is a blood tonic and restores reproductive balance. Although primarily thought of as a female herb, men can also take dong quai to “build the blood.”
“Like many Chinese herbs, the use of dong quai is generally not well understood in the West. In the United States, it is often sold as a single herb remedy, whereas in China it is almost never taken by itself.”6 Traditionally, dong quai is blended with other herbs.
Dong quai’s warming, tonic properties are believed to be even stronger when the root is cooked in soups, teas, and other dishes. It is traditionally added to chicken soup, often with astragalus, and consumedover a four day period during recovery from illness or to improve poor circulation.
“Four Things Soup, the most widely prescribed women’s tonic in China, is made of equal parts dong quai, peony (Peonia albiflora), rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa), and ligusticum (Ligusticum sinense).”6 You will note that all four of these herbs are in the Phyto-Tech™ Lustrous Hair Formula.
White Peony Root. The root and the root cortex of peony species, have been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescriptions for centuries. As part of complex herbal formulas, peony has been used to treat a wide variety of health conditions, including menstrual difficulties, nephritis, pulmonary heart disease, infantile pneumonia, and uterine fibroids (myomas). There is a growing body of research on TCM formulas containing peony in the treatment of women’s health complications including: menstrual difficulties, uterine myomas, coronary heart disease prevention, and hormone regulation.4
“Blood-promoting herbs aid circulation, nourish blood, increase its production, and are anti-thrombotic. Dong quai, Chinese salvia (Salvia miltiorrhiza), Chinese peony (Paeonia lactiflora), and safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) all support coronary blood flow and reduce myocardial oxygen use, ischemia, and arrhythmia. Dong quai opposes induced arrhythmia. Stephania (Stephania tetrandra) lowers cardiac automatic rhythm. Chinese salvia is vasodilating, improving microcirculation to the lungs and kidneys. Ligusticum wallichii has many potential CV benefits; with Chinese salvia and dong quai, it restored microcirculation after adrenaline-induced contraction. A peony extract has aspirin-like effects and may reduce platelet aggregation and thrombosis from hyperlipidemia or hypercholesterolemia.”8

Chinese Sage (Danshen), Notopterygium Root (Notopterygium incisum)
Chinese sage (danshen or Salvia miltiorrhiza). Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), often in combination with other herbs. Danshen should not be confused with sage. It grows primarily in the hilly areas in the west and southwest provinces of China. Remedies containing danshen are used traditionally to treat a diversity of ailments, particularly cardiovascular disorders, such as atherosclerosis or blood clotting abnormalities. Danshen is purported to improve blood circulation, although this has not been demonstrated in high-quality human trials. Constituents of the danshen root, particularly protocatechualdehyde and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-lactic acid, are believed to be responsible for its vascular effects.4
