BALANCED PLANETS:The art of creating balance in life, love and energy.

July 13th, 2010

Creating Balance involves the alignment of body, mind and spirit. This includes nourishing the body with healthy food and exercise, making time to relax and letting restful sleep be a priority.

John Gray explains how our minds and moods are affected by our hormones, and how hormonal balance is key to successful relationships and joyful living.

3- Day daily program:

1.Cleanse your body: Feel Refreshed

2.Look Good- Feel Great: Stress saps energy super foods energize.

Super Food daily power shakes: Stress increases cortisol and depletes the body of essential nutrients. Start the day with a power shake.

3. Balance and feel good:

Minerals play a important role in keeping us calm, focused and having energy to get through our day. Calcium helps build strong bones, Magnesium for healthy metabolism, chromium to stabilize blood sugar and healthy brain chemicals.

A steady supply of blood sugar helps keep hormone levels on an even keel, including the stress hormone cortisol. Prevent adrenal burnout and support the production of feel -good brain chemicals with the amino acids L-theanine, GABA and 5-htp.

Balanced planets will help you take the first steps to balanced living. Combing superb nutrition with the 3-step program, can help you get your health and life in balance.

Green Tea May Strengthen Teeth

June 17th, 2010

Researchers in Japan suspect that antimicrobial molecules in green tea help preserve teeth, as long as you don’t add sugar.

They found that men who drank at least one cup of tea a day were 19 percent less likely to have fewer than 20 teeth (a full set including wisdom teeth is 32) than those who did not drink green tea. Tea-drinking women had 13 percent lower odds.

Catechins have been shown to kill mouth bacteria associated with tooth decay and gum disease, so the researchers suspect this is what gives green tea its dental benefits.

“Previous research has indicated that regular consumption of green tea may lead to a lower instance of periodontal disease, a leading cause of tooth loss in adults,” said Samuel Low of the University of Florida College of Dentistry and President of the American Academy of Periodontology in a statement to Discovery News.

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is part of maintaining a healthy body, Low said. “That is why it is so important to find simple ways to boost periodontal health, such as regularly drinking green tea — something already known to possess many health-related benefits.”

Tired of sleepless nights? Get Z’s Naturally

May 27th, 2010

I read this in “health e times” and have condensed it a bit for us here:

Having trouble sleeping at night?  You’re not alone: 70 million Americans have sleep problems.  Just one night of poor sleep can affect your memory and conversation skills, not to mention your productivity.   Longer intervals of sleep deprivation are linked to depression, high blood pressure, decreased immunity, obesity, and heart attacks.  This is why making sure that you get proper rest is as important as getting to the gym or eating right.

So here are some basic tips for healthy sleep:

1>  Relaxing Bedtime Routine.  Keep a regular sleep time. Creating the routine is really important, and trains your body to the habit of sleep.  Make sure your room is cool, quiet, and dark.

2> Regular exercise, but don’t do it too late!  Exercise helps you make hormones to sleep, but be sure to finish your workout at least three hours before bedtime.

3>Avoid stimulants and intoxicants.  While alcohol can help you relax, it actually interferes with your sleep cycle, not to mention your body’s regular hormonal cycle.  Avoid alcohol for a few hours before sleep.  Also, colas, teas, and coffees (even decaffeinated!) disturb sleep.

4>Make your bedroom your sleep place.  Remove your work stuff, televisions, and computers.  This will train your mind and body to associate your bedroom with sleep.

5>Make the most of the sleep you get!  Sometimes it’s the kids getting up in the night, sometimes it’s work that shortens your sleep time.  If you practice some meditation regularly, and well, you tend to need less sleep, and the sleep you do get is better.  Consider picking up a deep relaxation CD at the book store, or check out www.himalayainstitute.org for meditation Audio and DVDs.   Click on the “Shop” and explore!  A guided meditation CD is a good place to start. It gives you the structure to learn with, and a nice voice to help you get there.

Beyond these environmental and lifestyle factors, some sleep problems are due to nutrient deficiencies.  Two important nutrients for sleep are calcium and magnesium.  Calcium has a calming affect, magnesium relaxes the muscles.  Stress depletes your calcium and magnesium levels.  Being depleted in these nutrients can make you wake up after a few hours and have a hard time getting back to sleep.  Magnesium can also help your body deal with anxiety, nervousness and tension. (If you are on heart medications, especially blood pressure, check with your doctor before adding these minerals.)  Here is one of my favorites , but there are lots to choose from:

This has calcium and magnesium and other trace minerals.  (helps my leg cramps!)

And, the big fact for you to take away form this blog:   “The quality of your sleep determines your quality of life while you’re awake.”

So, if you’re having troubles, talk to your practitioner (or us, your vitamin and supplement professionals).  Because you shouldn’t have to be a baby to sleep like one.

Last, but not least…this sleep problem in our country is the reason why when someone comes into our store asking for supplements to help with memory, the first thing we ask is, “how are you sleeping?”  While there are other things that contribute to memory problems, checking in on sleep is an easy place to start.  So, if after trying these things you still can’t remember where you put your keys or what your boss just said…stay tuned for my memory blog.

Great weighloss testimonial!!

May 3rd, 2010

A Michigan husband and wife couple have lost 22 lbs. since last Friday by changing only one thing in their life: they are drinking Lifetime Life’s Basics Plant Protein shakes in the morning. They mix up one blender and share it. They are full until dinner time.

$25.99 each.

The husband started Friday, 4/9, and he has lost 14 lbs.

The wife started Monday, 4/12, and she has lost 8 lbs.

The wife has done a great deal of research on diets, protein meal replacements, etc., and the more she read about plant-based proteins, the more she leaned toward Lifetime plant proteins, with the broad array of chia, pea, hemp and rice proteins. After having tried it, she is convinced this is superior protein and it is filling her body’s food cravings and nutritional needs.

The wife just called in to say thank you.
CONGRATULATIONS!

Check out this posting from the American Cancer Society!

Be Active, Drink Smart

By Dana Jacobi
for the American Institute for Cancer Research

Today, it’s hard to walk down the street without seeing a sports drink in someone’s hand. Originally created to help football players and other athletes replace electrolytes lost through perspiration during vigorous exercise, these drinks replenish sodium and potassium. Now, with mass marketing strategies and celebrity endorsements, people from Little Leaguers to Boomers are gulping sports drinks – both on and off the field.

While most ads for sports drinks feature athletes working out intensely, many consumers are missing the message that these products are meant for use after extended exercise (60 minutes or more). I’m a prime example, drawn by a desire to be one of the “active” set. Although my most frequent exercise is a brisk 30 minute walk at least twice a week, walking around with a bottle of sports drink makes me feel like I’m projecting the look of a more dedicated athlete.

Well, that was until I took a look at a label. Besides electrolytes and water, these products provide ample sugar, 15 grams per eight ounce serving. A 32-ounce bottle – the most popular size sold – packs a whopping five tablespoons of sugar.

Since few people do work out hard enough to require a true sports drink, I decided to make up an alternative. The goal was to create a refreshing beverage that looked cool, too, without the added sugar.

I wanted to use real fruit in a drink that was lighter than a smoothie, but more satisfying than simple juice. To do this, I whirled honeydew melon, kiwifruit, lime juice and agave nectar in a blender and voila! Green Gulp.

Honeydew and kiwi are excellent sources of vitamin C and both supply potassium to replenish lost electrolytes in the case of excessive perspiration. Agave nectar, made from the cactus plant and sold at natural food stores, is much sweeter than sugar, so you need only a touch. For extra refreshment, you can freeze the melon before pureeing it, and whirl a few mint leaves into this tall, green drink.

Green Gulp 1462

Green Gulp (Or Honeydew Kiwi Smoothie)

2 cups cubed honeydew melon, frozen or well-chilled
1 ripe kiwi, peeled and sliced
2 Tbsp. fresh lime juice
1 Tbsp. agave nectar (or honey)
2 mint sprigs, optional, for garnish

In blender, whirl melon, kiwi, lime juice and sweetener until smoothly blended. If using frozen melon, divide smoothie between 2 tall, narrow glasses. If using chilled melon, pour the smoothie into glasses filled with ice cubes. Garnish each glass with mint sprig, if desired, and serve immediately.

Makes 2 servings.

Per serving: 120 calories, 0 g fat (0 g saturated fat), 32 g carbohydrate ,
2 g protein, 3 g dietary fiber, 35 mg sodium.

Inositol, the smoker’s lung cancer gene stabilizer

April 20th, 2010

Just saw this interview on the today’s show aired nationally on Inositol!!

Lung cancer is most of the times caused by smoking, but the appearance of a drug which can prevent lung cancer development, shouldn’t stop concerns about smoking, because cancer is just one of the diseases you get from this harmful habit.

If Inositol – which is already being sold in health food stores -can prevent lung cancer, then this type of cancer might lose its place as the largest cancer killer.

Lung cancer Gene Stabilizer really beneficial for smokers

This is some great research on Inositol a naturally occurring nutrient that is usually classified as a carbocyclic polyol. The most common form of inositol is sometimes referred to as myo-inositol. In the human body, inositol plays a major role in preventing the collection of fats in the liver, as well as promoting healthy hair growth. The presence of the nutrient also aids in efficient processing of nutrients into the conversion of energy, which in turn helps the body to maintain a healthy metabolism. Inositol also can be considered brain food, as the nutrient is necessary to properly nourish the brain.

A number of foods contain at least trace amounts of inositol. Cereals with a high bran content are relatively good sources of inositol. Red beans, and in particular kidney beans, are also good sources. Among fruits, oranges and cantaloupes tend to have higher amounts of inositol present, although most fruits do have at least a small amount. Many of the currently popular energy drinks, sometimes referred to as boost drinks, will note that their formula contains inositol.

Still on ADD support for Kids..

April 15th, 2010

Have been fighting focus and concentration lately while studying for my CN exams. Thought of trying some PS (PhosphatidylSerine) to help with memory

and attention. As a matter of fact we gave it to our 5 yrd old son also so he can focus away from his Super Heroes  friends and sit still to do some reading and learning. It made a huge difference…I knew this ingredient was great in helping the neurons connect better and faster in the brain but took this to a new level after hearing Dr. Kidd an expert in PS and brain function on our weekly health radio show.

Here is an excerpt from it :

The Top 10 Toxic Products You Don’t Need

February 23rd, 2010

I saw this article on Yahoo today..

Here are ten toxic products, in no particular order, that you don’t need. And, once you read about them, you probably won’t want them either. Be aware that different homes may have different products that are more toxic than these. This is just a basic list of some of the most commonly purchased products that are almost entirely unnecessary, but pose significant risks.

  1. 1. Air fresheners
  2. Drain, oven and toilet bowl cleaners
  3. Canned food
  4. Pesticides
  5. Dry-cleaning
  6. Bottled water: Most people buy bottled water thinking they’re avoiding any contaminants that may be present in their tap water. For the most part, they’re wrong. Bottled water can be just as, or even more, contaminated than tap water. In fact, some bottled water IS tap water – just packaged (in plastic that can leach chemicals into the water) and over-priced. Also, from manufacture to disposal, bottled water creates an enormous amount of pollution – making our water even less drinkable. Do yourself and the world a favor and invest in a reusable stainless steel water bottle and a water filter. Try the ecoflowater filter bottles in Stainless and BPA free plastic. Each bottle filters 750 bottles of plastic water bottles..
  7. Rubber duckies
  8. Perfume and cologne
  9. Oil-based paints and finishes
  10. Couch cushions
