Green Coffee Bean Extract Studied for Weight Loss

What has the media and the scientific community so excited about Green Coffee Bean Extract is that people don’t have to do anything different when taking this food supplement, they don’t need to exercise, they don’t need to diet, they just appear to drop pounds! The most recent study on Green Coffee Bean Extract published in the Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity journal followed a group of 16 adults who supplemented with Green Coffee Extract for 12 weeks. Over the course of the study, the subjects lost an average of 17 pounds each – this was 10 percent of their overall body weight and 16 percent of their overall body fat!

How Does Green Coffee Bean Extract Work for Weight Loss?

So, let’s dig into Green Coffee Bean Extract, starting with the question, “how does Green Coffee Bean Extract work against weight gain?” Believe it or not, the key is not the caffeine! Green Coffee Bean Extract contains only about 23 mgs of caffeine per serving whereas a daily cup of coffee has over 100 mg. Instead it is a very important natural active compound called Chlorogenic Acid. The Chlorogenic Acid in Green Coffee Bean Extract works by inhibiting the release of glucose in the body while at the same time boosting the metabolism or the “burning” of fat in the liver. These two mechanisms combined work together to inhibit the absorption of fat and eliminate weight gain.

Can You Just Drink Coffee to Get the Same Effects as Green Coffee Bean Extract?

You might wonder if you can get the same effects from the coffee you drink with breakfast in the morning – and the answer is no. When you roast coffee beans to give them that distinct color, aroma and flavor, you are also removing the Chlorogenic Acid, which is the key to healthy weight loss. Green Coffee Bean Extract, in contrast, is unroasted, has little aroma, is bitter, and contains over 50% Chlorogenic Acid. It would take 14 cups of coffee to equal the same amount of Chlorogenic Acid in just 350mg of Green Coffee Bean Extract.  Roasting coffee beans destroys the Cholorgenic Acid, which is the key component to supporting weight management.

What Other Benefits Does Green Coffee Bean Provide?

The Chlorogenic Acid in Green Coffee Bean Extract has been touted as supporting healthy blood sugar levels. Research has suggested the reason for this as being the effects of the Chlorogenic Acid in Green Coffee Bean Extract on glucose metabolism

A team of Japanese researchers recorded a 43% drop in blood sugar levels after administering Green Coffee Bean Extract to mice after a heavy meal. In a clinical trial presented in 2011, researchers gave different dosages of standardized Green Coffee Bean Extract, each containing 50% chlorogenic acid, to 56 people. Next, they gave the participants 100 grams of glucose in an oral glucose challenge test. The oral glucose tolerance test is a standard method of gauging an individual’s response to after-mealsugar exposure.

Blood sugar levels dropped by an increasingly greater amount as the test dosage of Green Coffee Bean Extract was raised, from 100 mg up to 400 mg.At the 400 mg dosage, there was a full 32% decrease in blood sugar—two hours after glucose ingestion.

Glucose is stored in the liver in a polysaccharide called glycogen, which is a long, branched chain of insoluble glucose molecules. In a process known as glycogenolysis, the enzyme glucose-6-phosphatase releases free glucose into the bloodstream, where it circulates to various organs. If glycogenolysis is inhibited, the body gets its energy from fat cells. This reduces blood glucose levels, helping to reduce the symptoms. Also, reducing the number of fat stores leads to weight loss.

How Much Green Coffee Bean Extract Should I Take?

Green Coffee Bean Extract is available in dietary supplements that provide either 200 or of Chlorogenic Acid per serving. The typical dose for most people is 200 mg of Chlorogenic Acid before most meals. Those with higher glucose levels should take 400 mg before most or all meals.
